"Named for General Hugh Mercer whose death at the Battle of Princeton was commemorated in the naming of Mercer County, Mercer Street was constructed through the battleground in 1807 as the Princeton-Kingston Branch Turnpike. In the 19th century it became lined with many significant buildings...."
